Summer vs Winter Koi Feeding

Koi are cold blooded, meaning that their metabolism changes based on the temperature of their pond. Experienced koi owners make a few adjustments to their fish’s feeding plans as the water temperature changes with the seasons.

Hot weather

  • Feed an amount fish will readily consume in 5 minutes. Feed 2 to 4 times per day with Ultra Balance Premium Maintenance formula or 3 to 5 times per day with our Ultra Balance Premium Growth formula for optimum growth of young fish.
  • Reduce feeding if water temperature exceeds 88°F and watch closely for signs of stress.
  • There’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all feeding plan. Water temperatures, water quality, dissolved oxygen levels and stocking densities should be considered prior to feeding.

Cold weather

  • For water temperatures below 64°F, feed a highly digestible wheat germ diet such as Ultra Balance Premium Maintenance.
  • Feed an amount fish will readily consume in 5 minutes. Feed 1 to 2 times per day.
  • If the water temperature drops below 50°F, we suggest you stop feeding your koi (fasting them) since their metabolism slows down. They will only eat what their body requires by grazing on algae as needed. You can begin to introduce food again once the water temperature rises consistently above 50°F again.
